General Instructions
- Rest: Get plenty of rest in the first 24 hours after surgery. Avoid strenuous activity, such as lifting heavy objects or exercising.
- Diet: Eat a soft diet for the first few days after surgery. Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods. Good options include soup, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and eggs.
- Bleeding: Some minor bleeding is normal after oral surgery. If you experience bleeding, place a gauze pad over the surgical site and apply pressure for 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, please call our office.
- Swelling: Swelling is also normal after oral surgery. It will usually peak within 24-48 hours and then gradually subside. To reduce swelling, apply ice packs to the outside of your cheek for 20 minutes at a time.
- Pain: You may experience some pain after surgery. This is usually mild and can be controlled with over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If you have severe pain, please call our office.
Oral Hygiene
- Brushing: You may resume your normal brushing routine on the day after surgery. However, be gentle around the surgical site.
- Flossing: Avoid flossing the surgical site for at least 7 days after surgery.
- Rinsing: Do not rinse your mouth on the day of surgery. On the day after surgery, you may begin rinsing with a warm saltwater solution (1/4 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water). Rinse gently 3-4 times daily for 7 days.
Other Instructions
- Smoking: Do not smoke for at least 72 hours after surgery. Smoking can delay healing and increase your risk of complications.
- Alcohol: Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours after surgery. Alcohol can interact with your pain medication and increase your risk of bleeding.
- Medications: Take all medications as prescribed by your doctor.
Following your post-op care instructions can help ensure a safe and successful recovery from your oral surgery. By taking the time to recover properly, you can minimize your risk of complications and maximize your chances of a full recovery.
