Pre-Op Instructions For Anesthesia, Sedation

Thank you for choosing Advanced Dental Implants & Oral Surgery for your oral surgery needs. We understand that surgery can be a stressful experience, so we want to do everything we can to make your surgery as safe and comfortable as possible.

Here are some pre-op instructions to help you prepare for your surgery:

  • Follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions on how to prepare for your surgery, such as when to stop eating and drinking and what medications to take. Be sure to follow these instructions carefully to help ensure a successful surgery.
  • Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. You will need to be able to remove your clothing easily after surgery, and you may also be wearing bandages or a splint.
  • Bring a friend or family member to drive you home after surgery. You will not be able to drive yourself after anesthesia.

Here are some additional tips for a successful pre-op experience:

  • If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our office. We are happy to answer any questions you have and help you prepare for your surgery.
  • Arrive at our office at least 30 minutes early for your appointment. This will give us time to check you in and get you prepared for surgery.
  • Relax and take deep breaths. We understand that surgery can be a stressful experience, but we are here to help you every step of the way.

Pre-Op Instructions For Local Anesthesia

*Minors under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or a legal guardian.

Ask the Advanced Dental Implants & Oral Surgery team if you should alter any of your at-home medications.

  • Blood thinners: Under certain circumstances, it is OK to continue using blood thinners. Please check with our office. You may be asked to get a blood draw before surgery.
  • Diabetic medications: It is typically best to take your usual diabetic medicine unless you are fasting for surgery.
  • Heart and blood pressure medicines: It is important to continue taking these medications; usually, they should not be altered.
  • Asthma: Bring your inhalers to the appointment.

If You Will Be Asleep: Sedation Pre-Op Instructions

Please ask a team member if you need to alter any of your usual medications.

  • Since you will be fasting, you may have to alter your medicine for conditions such as diabetes.

Come in with an empty stomach.

  • You should not eat anything for 8 hours prior to your surgery. (Example: If your surgery is at 8:00 a.m., do not eat after midnight.)
  • If your surgery is late in the day, a light breakfast is okay. (Example: A breakfast of tea and toast at 6:00 a.m. is acceptable for a 2:00 p.m. surgery.)
  • If you regularly take medications, be sure to take them normally as prescribed, with just a small sip of water (e.g., blood pressure pills).

You need an escort.

  • A responsible adult should bring you to the appointment, stay throughout the surgery, and take you home afterward.
  • It is best to have somebody available the rest of the day after the surgery in case you need assistance.

Do not wear contact lenses to your surgery appointment. Jewelry may also need to be removed for the surgery.

Wear a loose-fitting, short-sleeved shirt or blouse and comfortable, flat shoes. Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.

What our Patients Say About Us

I have been dealing with ongoing off and on problems with my mandible since 2015. Dr. Vega is the one who saved my life, debrided it correctly, put me on IV ABT, wired my jaw so it wouldn’t break and placed 2 successful implants all with genuine care, great bedside manner and professionalism. I had to return to him d/t another unfortunate event and he has stuck with me through thick and thin. He is an excellent physician, he does everything he can to set you up for success, but sometimes it’s our bodies that don’t cooperate. I highly recommend him!

Dr. Vega saw me, identified my problems on the initial visit. It was obvious he was both knowledgeable & experienced with this type of problem. He included me in developing the plan of care and answered all of my questions. He explained every aspect in a way I could understand, using models and pictures for clarity. His pleasant, approachable & caring attitude offered me the opportunity to ask questions, eliminating fears & anxiety. I highly recommend Dr. Vega and his team.
